The slider green arrow to the right controls the intensity of the modulation. This intensity can be controlled as well, by selecting a parameter from via. When selected, an orange arrow will appear with the green arrow, and these can be used to set the min and max of the modulation intensity. If you rotate the knobs to the left, the values oscillate freely, but if you want them locked to the tempo, rotate them to the left.

LFO 1 has an EG knob that is used to set the fade in and fade out time for the modulation. EXS24 has two envelopes. They are both useable as sources in the router. The attack slider is split, with the upper setting the attack time for minimum velocity and the lower setting the attack time for maximum velocity. The Time via Key slider lengthens or shortens the envelope time intervals, while the Curve slider determines the shape of the attack curve.

Notice by raising the sustain and release, you can emulate a sustain pedal on the piano. The instrument editor is where you edit sampler instruments.

You get there by clicking the edit button on the top right. One way to get a vocal chopped effect is to import an audio file of vocals into EXS Logic Fiends recommends doing a Splice Free Trial. All keys will trigger the same sounding pitch. The problem here is that my sample is in the key of G, but EXS24 is going to assume everything is based on a key of C3. This is what it sounds like with the Vocal. Now I can add in a second Vocal Sample. This one is in the key of E, so after I drag it in, I do the same thing as above, and change the key from C3 to E3.

You can see in the image above, the blue strip for the 2nd sample is from F3 all the way to the last note on the keyboard. Another way to edit the zone range is to drag the blue strip to the notes ranges you want covered. Now when I play the pattern, the notes for E3 and below will play the first sample, and the notes for F3 and above will play the 2nd sample. You can run the sample as a loop, and adjust the start and end time.

This is useful if you have a sample with a long tail of silence or reverb that you want to cut off. Or perhaps the vocal sample is a whole line, and you just want to pull out one word from it. First click the looping icon yellow button above with circular arrows as this will make it much easier to hear what you are editing.

The sampler instrument editor opens up so we can tweak existing instruments, or in this case, create our own. Note: You can also drag and drop audio files directly from the Finder onto this window to create instruments. Quick and easy, but not quite as organized and controlled of a set-up in my opinion, which is generally preferred when creating instruments for your personal library.

A file named G 5, will be placed on the G key in the fifth octave on your keyboard, and so on. The sampler editor window gives us a host of different options on how EXS24 treats each sample in our newly formed instrument. Along the top of the list you see a series of options including tuning, volume, pan, key range, pitched 1Shot, Reverse and more.

Many of which are self explanatory, for example, Reverse will indeed reverse the sample, playing it back to front when it gets triggered. Key Range will determine which key or range of keys that particular sample gets played back from. We can choose to extrapolate the pitch of a particular instrument by dragging the right or left corner of the samples here.

For example, if you have a sample that plays the note C, you can drag the right and left corners of that sample to pitch it chromatically across the keyboard same as Key Range.

Now, in order to save this newly created instrument to our permanent custom sample instrument library, all we need to do is save it. Feel free to store them where you like, but I personally like to use the folder Logic provides me, as it keep things neat, tidy and reliable for future sessions.
